1888 –
the cordova hotel opens

Franklin W. Smith opens the Cordova Hotel, a 138-room Moorish and Spanish Baroque Revival landmark, just after Henry Flagler’s Ponce de León debuts across the street. The Cordova struggles to attract guests and is purchased later that year by Flagler.

A CONNECTED ERA

A pedestrian bridge links the Flagler’s Cordova and Alcazar hotels, symbolizing his growing empire. The link endures until the Great Depression forces both properties to close.

1968 –
A NEW CHAPTER AS A COURTHOUSE

After decades of vacancy, the former Cordova Hotel reopens as the St. Johns County Courthouse. Preserving its historic façade and ornate details, the building serves the community for over a decade before standing vacant once again by the late 1970s.
