Richard C. Kessler Awards Ten Orange County Public School Teachers
5/14/2007

ORLANDO, FL (May 14, 2007) – Richard C. Kessler, Chairman and CEO of The Kessler Enterprise, Inc., announced today this year's winners of the Orange County Public School/Kessler Grand Bohemian Hotel Scholarship “Excellence In Teaching Fine Arts" Awards. During a private luncheon on May 22 at Kessler's AAA Four-Diamond Grand Bohemian Hotel, 10 exemplary teachers will be awarded a $2,000 travel stipend, crystal plaque, a two-night weekend stay at the hotel, and recognition in OCPS publications for their dedication to teaching. The teachers' photographs will also be displayed at the property's prestigious Orlando Gallery of Who's Who on the fifth floor.

"Every year we distribute these awards as a way to give back to the teachers who work so hard to strive for excellence in our schools on a daily basis," Kessler says. "Our goal is to motivate and continue to encourage teachers to be such positive role models for their students. Given all of the talent in our school systems, we are pleased to be able to double the awards given in the Art, Drama and Music award categories this year."

Started in 2002, the scholarship was established by Kessler, an avid supporter of the arts. Throughout the year, the Grand Bohemian Hotel collects $1 per guest upon check-in to the hotel to benefit this scholarship which Kessler combines with a 50% matching amount. The awards this year are given to four elementary and secondary art teachers, four elementary and secondary music teachers, one drama and one dance teacher.

The 2007 winners are: VISUAL ARTS - Dinah Robinson, Mollie Ray Elementary; Wendy Martinez, Citrus Elementary; Rachel Buckley, Meadow Woods Middle School; Jim Phillips, Winter Park High School. DRAMA - Gail Chase, University High School. DANCE - Kimmy Keck, Ocoee High School. MUSIC - Shona McFadyen, OCPS District/Strings program; Virginia Ubels, Engelwood Elementary; Kenneth Boyd, Olympia High School; and James Henderson, Boone High School.
In addition, 17 finalists will also be awarded a two-night, weekend stay at the luxurious Grand Bohemian Hotel Orlando.

Carolyn Minear, fine arts program coordinator for Orange County Public Schools, said,“The OCPS/Kessler Grand Bohemian Scholarship is an excellent way to recognize our teachers for the very influential work they do year-round. We appreciate Mr. Kessler's generosity, which allows teachers the opportunity to use the travel stipend to study abroad or travel to various places in order to bring their experiences and culture back to their students."

For scholarship information, please call Carolyn Minear at (407) 317-3200 ext. 2751 or minearc@ocps.net. Applications for the 2008 awards will be available in January 2008.
